Latin Lawyer – Schmidt Valois hires environmental lawyer from Ulhôa Canto

Schmidt, Valois, Miranda, Ferreira, Agel Advogados has hired a senior associate as partner to lead its environmental practice.

Environmental and litigation lawyer Anna Paula Barbosa de Carvalho Góes, 47, joined Schmidt Valois on 9 July. She comes from Ulhôa Canto, Rezende e Guerra – Advogados, where she had worked for almost 12 years.

Góes brings more than 20 years’ experience in litigation and environmental law. She will work closely with the firm’s litigation head, João Alberto de Sá Barbosa. Her hire takes the total partner count to 11.

Schmidt Valois has strong practices in energy, infrastructure and mining law. The firm’s managing partner, Rogério Miranda, says finding an experienced lawyer who can offer good counsel on both environmental law and litigation is not easy. “We receive a significant number of mandates from clients related to environmental matters, which very often result or are already involved in litigation with the environmental authorities,” he says. “The need to hire a partner with her profile created the opportunity for her to join the firm.”

Góes was keen to make the move. “I was attracted by the possibility of developing the environmental department, which is my area of expertise,” she says.

Latin Lawyer contacted Ulhôa Canto for comment, but it did not reply prior to publication. It is best known for its tax practice and has around 28 partners.

Góes is Schmidt Valois’ second new partner in just two months. The firm hired oil and gas lawyer Luis Fernando Pacheco from Veirano Advogados in May.
