Latin Lawyer – João Agripino Maia joins Schmidt Valois

Schmidt Valois hires Veirano partner

Schmidt, Valois, Miranda, Ferreira, Agel Advogados has strengthened its tax offering by hiring a partner from Veirano Advogados.

João Agripino Maia, 48, joined the firm, which now counts 12 partners, on 1 February.

Maia focuses on corporate taxation, cross-border transactions, mergers and acquisitions and tax litigation. He has represented a variety of companies in audits and administrative appeals.

Rogério Miranda, co-managing partner of Schmidt Valois, says the firm was looking for a lawyer which had extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions and in the regulated sectors, and Maia fit that profile.

Maia spent eight years at Veirano, which followed another eight-year stint at Xavier Bernardes Bragança Sociedade de Advogados.

Schmidt Valois is best known for its oil and gas, project finance, mining and environmental practices.

Ricardo Veirano, managing partner of Veirano, says Maia left the firm on very good terms. He adds that the firm’s tax department is well-staffed with attorneys that it may opt to promote. The firm counts 77 partners in total.

Veirano has particularly strong anti-corruption, antitrust, maritime and real estate practices. The firm has also been busy strengthening its partnership, most recently promoting two associates to partner in its corporate and disputes practices.
